Essi Kausalainen has been an artist in residence at USF Verftet since mid October. This Friday she gathers friends and colleagues to hang out in her studio. She might even show some work in progress.
Essi Kausalainen (b. 1979) has been active in the contemporary art scene since 2000 making performances and exhibitions.
Perceiving the world as an organic entity, a chaotic body in the constant process of growth and decay, Kausalainen makes works wherein the space, different species of beings and things appear as active performers along the human body. She creates ceremony like situations and events in close collaboration with plants, minerals and objects to examine and celebrate their quiet interaction.
During her residency at USF Kausalainen explores the possibility to perform plant thinking. As part of this project she is researching on plant philosophy, plant physiology, feministic science studies (special focus on quantum physics), inter-species performances and new materialism, as well as developing a new work to be performed in Malmö Moderna Museet in January.
