Neda Tavallaee (1973) is a painter living and working in Iran. She will stay at Artist in Residence Bergen at USF Verftet in March 2014. Her residency is supported by Bergen council both through the residency itself, and through “Rask respons”.
“To be an artist has always been a struggle in Iran. As every subject can be interpreted as politcal or considered taboo. Therefore causing an unnerving sense of self censorship. I find the best approach is to depict what I experienced firsthand and leave the rest to the viewers. Therefore I use pictures I take of gatherings or other social events I have personally attended as the basic sketches for my work. This way the pieces become honest representatives of things that actually have happened in modernday Iran. Giving a glimpse into what is often neglected, hidden or simply not known about our lives. Persians love celebrations and all that goes with it. Being dancing, drinking, eating good food or just mingling. Due to the many obsticals nowadays, these kinds of merrymaking are privatly done and only in safe havens, with ever present dark shadows of fear hovering above them. Still people overcome the fear of being arrested just to feel human for a split second of their lives. I try to depict these moments, the tensions and the stolen moments of joy in my work.”

Native to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Brad Turner received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Alberta College of Art and Design 2006. His first change of scenery was to Toronto, Ontario as an Artist-in-Residence at the Harbourfront Centre Glass Studio. Here he developed a mix of sculptural and functional glass objects with a focus on originality, diversity, clean design, and the refined craftmanship for which he is known.
More recently, Turner received his MFA from Alfred University in Alfred, NY, USA, and is now pursuing opportunities abroad.
In addition to his artistic training, Turner holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of Calgary, having earlier pursued an interest in physical activity and awareness.
