In the 1960s and 70s the image of the sexually liberal Scandinavia arose in popular culture. Where did this image come from, why did it gain such firm foothold - and does it have anything to do with reality? Equal rights for both sexes, social democracy and economic advances were all factors that helped propagate the myth about Scandinavia as a modern sexual Utopia. Filmmakers in Sweden and Denmark mass-produced more or less sophisticated exploitation movies. The myth about sexy Scandinavia is still going strong outside Europe. Evidence of this can among other places be found in American sitcoms – where “Swedish girls” are frequently referenced. Writer and movie collector Jack Stevenson has spent the last four years writing a book about the Scandinavian sex myth. This work forms the basis for the meeting Totally Uncensored: The History of Scandinavian Sex Films. During his summary of Scandinavian sex film history, he will show clips from archetypal and paradigmatic films and draw lines between important events in and outside of film history. He will also talk about the Scandinavian countries’ different roles in the creation of the Scandinavian sex myth. After his presentation, there will be a debate on the subject. Please be advised that Totally Uncensored contains clips from movies with pornographic content. This meeting is held in cooperation with Bergen filmklubb.
