In the exhibition Your Revolution Begins at Home, Michelle Teran presents several artworks: Folgen, The Little Yellow House and Mortgaged Lives. Each work maps out a journey from information to the home. The exhibition is presented as a spatial installation which uses performance, installation, film and text in which different areas of the gallery function as storytelling stations.

This solo exhibition presents the final artistic results of Michelle Teran’s research project Future Guides: From Information to Home, carried out within the Norwegian Artistic Research Fellowship Programme at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts (KHiB). Within her research project, she has considered different relationships generated through shifting perspectives and subjectivities that allow for multi-dimensional readings on the experience of dwelling which stem from an original source material, the online archive. This research has required a variety of different methods: archival study, mapping, image making, generation of texts, recorded interviews and field trips.

Each artwork revolves around the study of online archives generated within social media–a YouTube video, blog post or photograph–which becomes the impetus for travel towards someone or something in which meaning emerges through the process of both observation and journey. The experience of this journey becomes the basis for each work, which is a retelling of the expedition. Michelle Teran uses strategies of movement and translation–between language, appropriation of text and voice, the online and physical domain, mapping and storytelling, and different aesthetic forms–to perform various microhistories of individuals that speak about life in networked society and notions of home.

The exhibition will run from September 4th – 13th 2014, and will be accompanied by a program of live events throughout the week.

The lecture performance Folgen draws on the existing narratives of video makers found on YouTube, using the traces they have left in the public sphere of the internet to follow people throughout the city. Rupture Sessions is a staged reading from the transcripts of a series of group discussions that took place between a psychologist and four women living in Madrid who had experienced eviction. Performed by 5 women living in Bergen, the translation and displacement of these transcripts bring personal experiences into more universal issues around social rupture and the disintegration of the home. The film Mortgaged Lives examines the experience of rupture, through the loss of a home, centring on the eviction crisis in Spain. Mortgaged Lives will be screened at Cinemateket. The performances Folgen and Rupture Sessions will take place within the USF exhibition space.

The exhibition opening is on September 4th at 19.00. There will be a lecture performance of Folgen at 20.00.

The exhibition is supported by Stipendiatprogrammet for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid / Kunst -og Designhøgskolen i Bergen.
