Feature length Norwegian experimental films are few and far between. And the ones that are actually successful in their experiments are very scarce indeed. Oddvar Einarson's debut feature X is one such film.
X is the story of Flora, a teenage girl, and Jon Gabriel, a twenty-something photographer. Flora's family is coming apart at the seams and she is living part time on the streets. Their relationship starts when the two accidentally meet and Flora asks if Jon Gabriel knows of anywhere she could live. She soon moves in with her new acquaintance and the two settle into a strange relationship where Jon Gabriel plays the role of both boyfriend, big brother and father all at once. In each other the two lost souls clearly find something they have been looking for, but the unresolved nature of the relationship makes it impossible for them to go on.
X is a highly stylized film about solipsism and the possibility of actually getting close to other human beings. Its highly intriguing mix of bleak city landscapes and formally experimental dialogue won it the special jury prize at the 1986 Venice Film Festival.
